Abalone

A shellfish with a soft body and a single oval shell lined with mother-of-pearl.

Acid

Sulphuric acid is commonly used to remove fine scale and borax from jewelry. Let your jeweler handle this kind of liquid!

Adjustable rings

At some point on our lives the knuckles of our fingers get larger than the inside part where your ring sits. We work with many different companies which offer adjustable ring shanks, i.e. they open over the knuckle and close on the finger.

Agate

Agate is a hard stone with striped or clouded coloring.

Alabaster

Alabaster is an aggregate variety of the mineral species. It's color is white-gray and typically carved in decorative objects.

Alabastes A smooth, white stone usually used for statues.

Alexandrite

Alexandrite is the color changing variety of the mineral chrysoberyl. Discovered in 1831 at Tokowaya in the Urals, the alexandrite is emerald green in daylight but dark red in artificial light. It occurs in acid rocks or where they are in contact with micas or dolomitic marbles and in alluvium.

The best alexandrites come from the Ural mountains in Russia, however, large stones are also found in Ceylon, together with cat´s eye, and yellowish-green and pale green-yellow chrysoberyl. Some other sources are Africa and Brazil and Sri Lanka. A good quality Russian alexandrite can be more valuable than a sapphire.

Amber is an amorphous organic material consisting of fossilized tree resin. Read more about amber.

Amulet An amulet is an object that is worn on the body because it is supposed to have magical powers to protect against harm or evil.

Amethyst

Amethyst is a variety of the quartz mineral that is violet or purple in color. Birthstone for February, Pisces, it is a great looking, cost effective stone for any design. Read more about amethysts.

Andalusite Andalusite is a mineral species: orthorhombic crystal system. It is transparent to opaque and can range in color from brownish or yellowish green to orange-brown.

Antique Rings

Most "antique rings" are not really antique, but styled on older fashions of the time, i.e. Victorian jewelry. Training in old style jewelry techniques with all metals is a great plus when working on old classics or new replicas. Please call or email us with your questions on this subject.

Apatite Apatite is a mineral group; hexagonal crystal system. It is transparent to translucent and ranges in color from yellow, green, violet, purple, blue, pink, and brown, to colorless.

A baguette is the name of a gem cut in the shape of a narrow rectangle.

Bangles A rigid form of bracelet, most bangle are factory made. We make them from precious metals and stones.

Barrette A barrette is a clasp for holding hair in place.

Belly Rings We do not work with stainless steel, but have made a few belly rings with a cool looking, dangling diamond in them!

Beritoite Beritoite is a blue, violet-blue stone that is found in the U.S.

Beryl Beryl is a mineral species that includes emeralds and aquamarines.

Bobby Pin Bobby pins are metal hairpins with the sides pressing close together.

Bracelets

Most bracelets are factory (production) made. Check out your local jeweler for options. We can make and repair precious metal bracelets and watch bands.

Bridal It is most important to get the ring you desire. Engagement and wedding rings are as important to us as they are to you. If we cannot help you, we will do our best to put you in touch with someone who can.

Brooch

A brooch is a pin with a clasp that is worn as an ornament.

Briolette A briolette is a gem cut in the shape of a faceted teardrop.

Cabochon A convex-cut, unfaceted gem with a high polish.

Carat A unit of weight for precious stones.

Cats Eye A term used to define a variety of semiprecious iridescent gems.

Chalcedony Chalcedony is a microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline quartz that has a semitransparent to opaque appearance and comes in a variety of colors.

Carnelian

Carnelian is semi-transparent to translucent yellow-orange to orange red, brownish red or brownish orange cryptocrystalline quartz. A great material for men's signet rings or classic crest engraved rings. We use stone engravers that have been trained in styles dating back over 300 years. Most stones are sent to Germany for engraving.

Chains We have made custom styles, but machine made chains are much more cost effective.

Chopard Chopard jewelry is unique in iteslf. We are able to work on this type of jewelry and supply genuine Chopard parts. Please whenever possible contact your local Chopard dealer for sizings, repairs and watch servicing.

Citrine

Citrine is a variety of quartz. The birthstone for November, Scorpio, it is a great looking cost effective stone for any design requiring a gold to yellow stone. Read more about citrine.

Claw A claw is a piece of metal holding a gem in place. In the U.S. it is called a prong.

Coat of Arms We have made many items with family crests or coat of arms.

Coral

An organic natural material, coral is a hard stony substance that is made up of the skeletons of many tiny sea creatures. It ranges in color from white, pink, reddish, or yellowish, to a deep red. Read more about coral.

Corundum A very hard mineral, aluminum oxide that occurs in gem varieties, as ruby and sapphire.

Crystal A three-dimensional structure made up of atoms, molecules or ions arranged in basic units that are repeated throughout the structure.

Cubic Zirconium

Cubic Zirconium is a man-made material with a cubic crystal system. Most often, it is used as a diamond submitted. If you want to wear a real tiara to a ball but your insurance company will not let you, let us make an exact coy in precious metal but set with cubic zirconium. It's not a joke, it's been done!

Cuts Most gems are not attractive in their rough state. Cutting gives each stone its unique lustre and beauty. Cutting is a balance of creating surfaces (smooth or faceted) that will enable a path of light traveling through a stone to display its best qualities. Cutting varies by type of stone - transparent ones are cut differently than opaque. Dark colored stones are often more shallow than pale colored stones. Doing so allows more light to travel through a dark stone and it will be brighter. Likewise a pale stone needs depth to give it sufficient color. The two basic forms of cutting are facets and cabochon.

Diamond A mineral that is a crystal form of nearly pure carbon. Diamond is the hardest natural substance known.

Diopside A mineral species, monoclinic crystal system with a transparent to opaque appearance. Its color ranges from bluish-green and yellowish-green, to brown and black.

Emerald Emerald is a green transparent form of beryl. Birthstone for May, Cancer. The emerald differs from other beryls in its deep green color, and has given its name to that luminous richness so sought after since ancient times. Some beautiful stones have been found in Transvall, India and Brazil. Emeralds can be fragile and flawed. We will work on emerald items, though in some cases we do so at the customer's liability. Glass Many jewelry items have fake stones in them that sometimes end up being just glass.

Gold A soft, yellow highly malleable and ductile metallic element that is used in the making of coins and jewelry. It also has many industrial and medical uses.

Ideal Cut Best proportions, facets, etc. cut on a gemstone to show its brilliance.

Iolite A mineral species, orthorhombic crystal system. It can be transparent to translucent and range from a light to dark blue and violet. It is sometimes called a water sapphire.

Iridescence A term used when discussing pearls, which means producing an array of rainbow like colors.

Ivory The hard smooth, yellowish-white material that forms the tusks of elephants and certain other animals.

Jade Jadeite is one of two minerals commonly called jade, the other is nephrite. Read more about Jade.

Jasper An opaque variety of quartz that is red, yellow or brown.

Jet Jet is an organic material. It is a compact, ornamental form of ignite coal. Semi translucent to opaque, its color can range from very dark brown to black. Read more about jet.

Lapis Lazuli Lapis Lazuli is a stone composed of lazurite, calcite and pyrite. It can be semi-translucent to opaque. Malachite Malachite is a mineral species of the monoclinic crystal system. It is generally opaque, and can range from vivid bluish-green to green. It is usually banded in two or more tones of green.

Microscope A tool used for looking at objects too small to be seen with the unaided eye.

Mohs Scale A scale for classifying the relative hardness of minerals - scale is from 1 for the softest to 15 for the hardest.

Moissanite A recent type of fake diamond.

Moonstone A translucent form of feldspar with a pearly luster that is used as a gem.

Natural Existing in or produced by nature. A term used for stones not enhanced by man, or as in a "natural flaw."

Niobium A soft, silvery, ductile metallic element.

Onyx Agate is a variety of chalcedony that occurs in colored bands. Onyx is the black band and is used as a gemstone.

Opal Opal is a mineral species with an amorphous structure. It is transparent to opaque and virtually any color. Read more about opals.

Pearl Natural pearls are organic gems formed around an irritant or parasite in the bodies of certain saltwater and freshwater mollusks; or they can be formed due to an abnormal physiological condition, and without human intervention of any kind. They are made up of mostly four platy crystalline layers called nacre, causing the distinctive pearly luster and having chemical composition CaCO3. Pearls also contain an organic binder called conchiolin and small amounts of water. Read more about pearls.

Peridot Peridot is a forsterite mineral, which is part of the olivine group orthorhombic crystal system. It can range from transparent to translucent and yellowish green and greenish yellow to brownish green.

Quartz Quartz is a mineral with a hexagonal (trigonal) crystal system. It ranges from transparent to opaque and forms in nearly all colors. Amethyst, tourmaline, and citrine are quartz.

Rhodium A hard durable, silvery-white metallic element used to form high-temperature alloys and corrosion-resistant coating. Most white gold items are rhodium plated to make them look whiter.
