Jewelry Facts

The hierarchical society of medieval and Renaissance Europe was sharply separated in manners, customs and pursuits. The distinctions between class were displayed in the clothing and jewelry they wore. Laws were passed to make sure that those audacious enough to wear clothing and ornaments above their station were punished.

My name is Stephen James Clarke. Trained in the old school of apprenticing to master jewelers, I began a five year apprenticeship in the jewelry industry at the Hatton Garden jewelry district, London, England at the age of sixteen. Under the apprenticeship program, expert master jewelers hand down their experience in a strict training program.

Twenty four years later, my business is built on that solid foundation of classic jewelry making techniques. For the last ten years, I've had my own business as a small manufacturer of fine jewelry for many of the Washington DC area's top jewelers. Large companies, political figures and many professional sports figures have all had custom pieces made by James Clarke, Inc.

Together with my colleagues, we offer beautiful, superbly manufactured jewelry designs. During my career, I've worked on pieces for many public personalities, including Princess Grace of Monaco.

Most recently, I was selected by the Smithsonian Museum set the Steinmetz Pink diamond into a pendant for Jenna Elfman to wear at the opening its exhibit for 2003 "The Splendor of Diamonds". In that same event, I was asked to remove and reset the Hope Diamond as it was being compared with other large blue diamonds.

We accept commissions to make anything from a ring to a crown. Most custom pieces can take from several hours to many days to complete. If you are interested in commissioning a special piece of jewelry, please allow us plenty of time to complete the job. Rush jobs rarely result in superior craftsmanship.
